Dig deep in a tough year

20 Nov, 2009 08:21 AM
SCHOOL students helped launch the annual UnitingCare and Target Share Christmas Gift Appeal this week.

It’s been a particularly tough year for many, with floods and the financial crisis leaving more disadvantaged people than ever before in need of support during the Christmas period.

UnitingCare is calling on people in Kempsey and surrounding areas to share the joy of Christmas with others in their community.

Local UnitingCare coordinator Noeleene Hawes is overseeing the distribution of gifts donated to Tar-get Kempsey.

“We’re asking Target shoppers to dig in deep, find some extra Christmas spirit and spend a little on others when they’re buying for their loved ones,” Mrs Hawes said.

“This year, everyone has felt the pinch to some extent, but it’s easy to forget that those most disadvantaged suffer more.

“There are children, teenagers, families and older people who often can’t afford to celebrate Christmas with gifts.”

Last year UnitingCare and Target distributed 357 gifts and 139 hampers at Christmas for those in need as part of the UnitingCare Share Christmas Gift Appeal.

“Shoppers can also be assured that each gift goes to people in our own community, so it’s a great way for everyone to contribute to local needs,” Mrs Hawes said.

All you have to do is spot the large UnitingCare Christmas tree at Target Kempsey and purchase a gift to place under the tree.

UnitingCare volunteers will collect the gifts and ensure they are distributed to those in need in time for Christmas morning.

Gifts and gift vouchers can be donated at the Target store Kempsey, or at any of the group’s other stores nationwide until Christmas Eve.
