A MAN who crashed his car then fled on foot from police after a high speed chase through the streets of Kempsey has been placed on a two year good behaviour bond.
Jamie William Pyne, 25, of Washington St, was fined $1600 and banned from driving for two years after crashing his car during a pursuit on a narrow one-way street in East Kempsey.
About 9.20pm on July 18 police travelling north on the Kempsey traffic bridge passed a vehicle being driven at high speed in the opposite direction, the Local Court was told last week.
Police turned and attempted to catch the vehicle, but it sped into Lower Lord St with its headlights off.
Lower Lord St is a narrow, one-way street and speed humps have been put in place to slow traffic in the area.
Pyne continued down the street at high speed and only narrowly avoided hitting a number of parked cars.
He continued on to the intersection of Dickson St where he attempted to make a tight left hand turn.
As he rounded the corner, he lost control of the vehicle, skidded across the road and collided with a tree.
Police arrived on the scene moments later to observe two men running from the crashed vehicle.
They gave chase and caught one of the men trying to escape into a backyard.
The other man was able to get away by hurdling a fence and disappearing into a nearby swamp.
Officers took the captured man to Kempsey Police Station where he named Pyne as the driver of the vehicle.
Pyne attended the police station the next morning, but was told the investigating officer was not available.
Police eventually spoke with Pyne some months later and he made full admissions to the crime.
He told police he had chosen not to stop as he only had one point left on his licence.
“I freaked out and bailed,” he told police during the interview.
Pyne can not drive again until January 31, 2012.
