ANGLERS have had a win in their fight to stop a proposed fishing ban off the coast of South West Rocks.
Delegates from Community Action for Fish Rock yesterday met with Primary Industries Minister Steve Whan and were successful in convincing him to agree to a review of all options for fishing in the area.
Industry and Investment NSW put forward two proposals for the area around Fish Rock:
1. A ban on burleying and bait fishing in an area of about 2km x 5km. Trolling and spinning would be permitted.
2. A total fishing closure in two areas of about 1km diameter each around Fish Rock and Green Island.
Anglers have been successful in putting a third option to the Minister which includes an extension to the buffer zone around Fish Rock; a ban on night fishing, wire trace fishing and fishing with circle and stainless steel hooks; and an increase in public awareness about the restrictions.
Mr Whan also pledged no new restrictions would be implemented before the start of the summer school holidays and promised to keep the action group apprised of any developments.
The Minister and Industry and Investment NSW had been criticised for a perceived lack of community consultation about the proposed changes.
“It’s all positive news and it’s brought us time, especially considering the current political climate,” Community Action for Fish Rock spokesman Chris Wallis said.
