LOCAL MP Andrew Stoner has condemned the State Government for its pathetic progress on the upgrade of the Pacific Hwy after a girl was killed south of Kempsey this week.
Learner driver Kayla Green, 16, died after the car she was driving crashed head-on into a Falcon sedan at Telegraph Point on Wednesday.
Kayla and three friends had travelled about 1000km from their home town of Griffith before the crash.
The friends reportedly left their homes on Tuesday afternoon because one of the girls - not Kayla- was having family issues.
Two of the other girls were aged 17. One was just 15.
None of them were qualified to accompany a learner driver.
The girls were travelling in a Ford Telstra sedan bought for Kayla on her 16th birthday.
Kayla’s father Rod said there were no arguments when his daughter left.
“She was a beautiful girl, well loved, well mannered ... she had a heart as big as a horse,” he said.
“There is no explanation for her leaving that we know of, we have no idea why ... her friends got her into it.”
Kayla’s three passengers were taken by road ambulance to Port Macquarie Base Hospital with multiple injuries.
The 15-year-old suffered abdomen and back injuries and has since been flown to the John Hunter Hospital’s trauma unit in Newcastle.
The driver of the other car, a man in his 40s, was trapped for an hour before being released.
He was taken by ambulance to hospital in a serious condition with injuries to his chest, pelvis and knee.
Wednesday’s accident was the latest in a string of fatal crashes on the Pacific Hwy this month.
It followed fatal accidents at Macksville and Valla Beach.
Accidents on the Pacific Hwy have contributed to an increase in the State’s road toll this year, which currently sits at 376 deaths - 84 more than this time last year.
Mr Stoner said the NSW Government had failed to invest in upgrades to the Pacific Hwy in order to prevent such tragedies occurring.
“Labor have broken their promise to upgrade the Pacific Hwy and as a result we are seeing more and more tragic accidents,” Mr Stoner said.
“The NSW Labor Government committed to upgrading the entire Pacific Hwy to dual carriageway by 2006 - it’s 2009, and it’s currently less than half done.
“If Labor had kept their promise, the entire Pacific Hwy would have been upgraded three years ago and these latest accidents may have been prevented.
“The Liberals and Nationals have long campaigned for the need to upgrade the Pacific Hwy to dual carriageway, and the community is demanding action.
“If elected to Government in 2011, we will make the upgrade of the Pacific Hwy a top priority.”
