GALE force winds pounded the coastline at Crescent Head, South West Rocks and Hat Head yesterday as holidaymakers and tourists took cover.
And for others, the rough weather was ideal for fishing and surfing.
A complex low pressure system on the east coast of Australia was to blame for huge seas and gusty winds from Point Danger to Seal Rocks.
Winds between 30 to 40 knots and thunderstorms continued for most of Sunday night, leaving some campers with a sleepless night.
Greg Crow from the Bureau of Meteorology said a low pressure system was north of Lord Howe Island and expected to move slowly away from the coastline yesterday evening.
Rain is likely today and tomorrow, with showers predicted for Thursday and Friday.
One surfer to brave the huge swells and cold conditions at Crescent Head yesterday was local Jackson Wetzler.
“Since Sunday the point has been massive and even last week here was good surf,” Jackson said.
The swell reached 3m to 4m yesterday with waves breaking dangerously close inshore.
Desiree Moran, who has been holidaying at Crescent Head since Easter Thursday, said Sunday night was wild.
“Thanks goodness we’re staying in a house and not a tent because there was torrential rain and it was very windy,” she said.
“The waves were so big the kids were catching waves in the creek yesterday.”
