Magical memories

30/10/2007 7:39:56 AM
It started out in 2004 as a simple local tribute to the memory of Slim Dusty who had passed away 12 months before, and now it is a fully-fledged concert set to attract legions of fans to the Kempsey Racecourse on Saturday night.

The Slim Dusty Country Music Memories Show will be headlined by his life-long partner and fellow performer Joy McKean.

Joy and her family, who will take the opportunity to spend some time at the Nulla, Slim’s boyhood home, are excited by the prospect of being on stage with the Slim Dusty troupe again.

“I am looking forward to a really enjoyable evening of music and meeting friends,” she said from her Sydney home.

“Anne and David will perform with some of the Travelling Country Band members, and even I am going to join them for some songs.

“The two young balladeers, Amos Morris and Nathan Charlton, will be great entertainment for everyone because they are both such good interpreters of Slim’s songs.

“Altogether, there will be a lot of favourite ballads sung, and a lot of memories for all of us,” Joy said.

Proceeds from the Slim Dusty Country Music Memories Show will help build the Slim Dusty Centre on the Pacific Highway.

The centre will house a museum dedicated to Slim’s achievements and house a collection of memorabilia collected by Slim and Joy during a lifetime on the road.

An exquisite red cedar coffee table made from timber at Slim’s Nulla Nulla property and handcrafted by craftsman George Crossingham, along with various other items, will be auctioned on the night, with all proceeds going to the project.

Now organised and run by the Rotary Club of Kempsey West, the concert was originally initiated by local Rotarian, Bruce Woods, holding a small evening on his property three years ago.

Now as the event co-ordinator, Mr Woods is ecstatic about the growing success.

“I have been overwhelmed by the many phone calls and widespread interest received for the concert,” he said.

“Ticket sales have been strong not only from the local community, but as far afield as Toowoomba, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Bribie Island, South Coast, Sydney and inland NSW.

“This will be an opportunity to hear Slim and Joy’s son David and their daughter Anne sing on stage together again.

“It will be a very rare performance,” Mr Woods said.

Anne, an award-winning performer in her own right, and David, taking time off from his busy duties as a doctor, will be joined by fellow award-winning young bush balladeers Amos Morris and Nathan Charlton.

Amos sang at the first Memories show aged 16, and Nathan, from Junee, continues to keep the bush ballad tradition alive for the next generation.

Gates open at the racecourse at 3pm with plenty of entertainment leading up to the main show at 6pm.

Patrons are advised to bring their own chairs and drinks.

Barbecue facilities, soft drinks, tea, coffee and cakes will also be available.

Tickets are $25, with children admitted free. They are available from In Harmony Music (Centrepoint Arcade, Kempsey) and Travelscene (Belgrave St).
