A HORRIFIC work accident in June left a local mechanic with third degree burns to his face, head, throat and right hand.
Gladstone resident Ray Smith was working on a vehicle in his workshop at Ray Smith’s Auto’s at Smithtown when the vehicle exploded.
As a result of his injuries, Mr Smith was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney for specialist treatment.
He was in a critical condition.
“Dad was taking a fuel tank out of a car when a light lead was tripped and caused the fuel tank to explode,” Ray’s son Andrew said.
Mr Smith remained in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital for some time before being transferred to the Severe Burns Unit in the same hospital.
“Originally we were told he would not be going home for at least eight weeks,” Andrew said.
“But due to his remarkable healing he was released from hospital a couple of weeks later to go home and recuperate from his injuries.”
Since being at home Mr Smith has continued with going to doctors and specialists appointments without a fuss.
However, since the accident Mr Smith has been unable to work and has had to close his business permanently.
“Because my dad is such a good bloke, I have to do whatever I can to assist financially,” Andrew said.
“He is no longer making an income and general living expenses don’t stop, which has made it difficult for him.”
Andrew has organised a Ray Smith Social Benefit Night to be held at the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club on September 12 to raise funds.
Swanky Benson will provide entertainment and everyone is invited to enjoy the night.
“We are asking for any donations of goods or services that may be auctioned or raffled on the night,” Andrew said.
