LOCAL MP Andrew Stoner last week received a response from NSW Police Minster, Michael Daley, about crime and anti-social behaviour in the South Kempsey area.
Speaking on behalf of Mr Daley, Parliamentary Secretary for Police Angela D’Amore said police on the Mid North Coast have a strong understanding of the local policing issues in the South Kempsey area.
“Since December 2008 there have been three police operations targeting crime, including stealing from a motor vehicle in the South Kempsey area,” she said.
“The operations resulted in over 15 charges, 113 offences and 29 intelligence reports.”
This included the arrests of four youths recently for a spate of robbery and stealing offences in and around South Kempsey.
The letter in part said:
“The Mid North Coast police have advised that in addition to the three targeted operations they continue to use Vikings funding to conduct high visibility policing operations. Operation Vikings are planned operations targeting general street crime across NSW and these operations exemplify the NSW Police Force’s approach to crime prevention and high visibility policing.
“Viking operations have proven to be an exceptionally successful strategy, targeting anti-social behaviour.
“They involve large numbers of police, patrolling crime hotspots at high-risk times to send a message to criminals and also reassure the public.
“Duty officers from Kempsey Police Station regularly meet with the mayor and council’s Crime Prevention Officer enabling council to raise any issues affecting the community and discuss possible solutions.
“Local police also attend the Doughnuts (Dunghutti) Community Justice Group meetings, which comprise local Aboriginal community based leaders and aims to reduce offending within the indigenous community.”
Mr Stoner said Angela D’Amore is the member for Drummoyne in inner Sydney and clearly had no idea about Kempsey.
“How embarrassing calling the Dunghutti people Doughnuts, they could view that as offensive,” Mr Stoner said.
“The letter doesn’t tell us anything we already didn’t know and there are no solutions for the future.”
