On the ball in the USA

16 Nov, 2007 07:50 AM
KEMPSEY Basketball members are gearing up to run rings around their American counterparts.

A contingent of 34 players, parents and coaches will leave Australian shores bound for the United States and British Columbia, Canada, at the end of the month.

Joining the Kempsey ambassadors on their basketball tour will be players from Wauchope, Port Macquarie, Grafton and the Northern Territory.

The group has been nicknamed the Aussie Travellers, and they will touch down in Seattle, Washington, on November 30 during the night.

Let’s hope none of the players get jet-lag as their first game on American soil is on the night of December 1 against Coupeville High.

Sunday will be a rest day then on Monday they match up against Oak Harbour.

On Tuesday morning the group will go to Anacortes to catch the ferry to Friday Harbour on San Juan Island in Puget Sound and play their high school that night.

On Wednesday it will be back to the mainland and they will cross the border into Canada.

After playing Yale, the varsity teams will play in a tournament at Robert Bateman Secondary.

They will cross back into the US to stay and play Blaine High School, which is right on the border.

The group will then play Mission Secondary in Mission, BC, before coming back into the States to play Lumni High, an American Indian School at Bellingham, Washington.

The last night they play the Homecoming match at Bellevue Christian High School in Bellevue, Washington.

The group will get some rest during the last leg of the journey. They will spend four days in Los Angles enjoying the sights and sounds of Disneyland, California Adventure Park, Universal Studios, and an NBA game before flying home.

The association would like to invite supporters from local business and friends to come to the Kempsey-Macleay RSL Club on Wednesday, November 21 from 5pm.

The association will wrap up their fundraising efforts with the final draw of their 200 club which is worth $1000.

As a special thanks, five dinner vouchers to local restaurants will be drawn.

“I would like to make a special mention to all the small businesses of the Macleay and Hastings,” organiser Ev Jacobs said.

“They have been fantastic in their support of our efforts. The smaller the business, the more willing they were to help out.

“A big thanks to those people who ate our 750 dozen lamingtons, bought our chocolates, rocky road and raffle tickets.

“The Gold Coast raffle will be drawn on November 27.”
