Unseasonal rain helps horses win

09 Feb, 2010 08:36 AM
WHILE Kempsey Race Club awaits a report from Racing NSW on its track at Warwick Park, three trainers were happy to see the rain which resulted in a heavy track at the club’s TAB meeting last Monday.

The unseasonal conditions helped in the wins of Mr Genuine for Taree trainer Nick Chambers, Coco Beware for Wauchope trainer Bob Graham and Pastoral Pursuits for the big stable of Ross Stitt from Taree.

These gallopers don’t mind the sting out of the ground and they showed it with comprehensive wins on the track.

Racing NSW is expected to soon release a report into investigations into the state of the track following the alleged poisoning of grass.

But when it comes to getting a winner, there were plenty of smiles among the winning trainers despite many of the gallopers having to skirt very wide on the track to obtain better going.

“I didn’t mind the rain as I got another win,” Graham said.

His galloper Coco Beware had three placings from 16 starts prior to being bought in Melbourne by owner Rick Taffe and the $8 for a win proved very lucrative for connections.

“The horse was a cheap buy and I think she has another win or two in her.

“She is a lovely big mare and she will be good for breeding purposes when her racing is finished,” said Graham.

Premier Port Macquarie jockey Peter Graham summed up the conditions in finishing down the outside fence on Mr Genuine which won by 3.5 lengths.

“Full credit to Pete for the ride,” Chambers said.

“I have had a good start to the year with four of my stable of six being winners but I could do with some gallopers with more depth.”

This follows the retirement of his eight-year-old mare Full On Amy, which had eight wins for nearly $100,000 in prizemoney.

“In about 15 months with me, I won five races with her for between $60,000 and $70,000 prizemoney.”

Unfortunately, the mare injured a leg in a race in early December and she is to become a broodmare, possibly to be mated with Lonhro.

As far as Mr Genuine is concerned, Chambers said the six-year-old gelding was living up to its name in being very honest.

“This horse has been racing on and off for the past 12 months and has had two wins and a string of placings.

“Because he is little, he needs light weights and it is difficult to find suitable races for him.

“In 35 of 65 starts he has finished in the top five and has been beaten less than three lengths in all his starts in the last three months.”

His other winners have been Dare To Challenge, If You Knew and Billy Will.
