Youthful Jack on a rich mission

07 Feb, 2012 07:57 AM
ONE $90,000 race done and won, another two rich classics to go -that’s the mission of six-year-old Taree gelding Youthful Jack.

As the Ross Stitt-trained galloper campaigns in Tasmania and eyes off the $1 million prize money threshold.

Last Wednesday the Youthful Jack won $54,000 in scoring in a 1200m race in Launceston but there are two more big races to plunder.

One is worth $100,000 over 1400m on Hobart Cup day, this Sunday, and the other is a $100,000 event over 1600m in Launceston on February 22.

Youthful Jack was floated to Tasmania on the Tasmanian Princess just over a fortnight ago and is in the capable hands of Launceston trainer Adam Trinder.

Stitt expects to fly south for this Sunday’s race and relive some of the fine moments he had when on a similar raid in 2006.

On that occasion his biggest win was with country cups champion Precise Timing, which won the $300,000 Launceston Cup, he also winning on the same day with another of his racehorses, Misty Crown.

The latter was bought by officials from the race club and subsequently won more races.

Stitt marvelled at the hospitality shown on that occasion, such being the occasion that yours truly also made the trip for a subsequent Launceston Cup to capture the spirit.

As was the case in 2006 when Cessnock jockey Robert Thompson made the trip to be on one of his favourite gallopers Precise Timing, Australia’s most winning jockey was at it again on Youthful Jack last week.

He not only had an easy length win on that galloper but also picked up a winning ride in the Guineas.

Stitt decided on sending Youthful Jack for the three races as they were under weight for age conditions and offered good prize money when options locally proved slim.

“The horse is not up to good Sydney company but is more than capable in the right races,” he said.

“He is happy and enjoying racing.”

In 44 starts, Youthful Jack has won 14 races and earned prize money nearing $820,000.

Two more wins will take that figure to over $900,000, similar to the prize money earned by Precise Timing before being retired.

Stitt said it would be a wonderful milestone if Youthful Jack could retire in being a $1m prize money winner.

After Tasmania, Youthful Jack will be given a spell before being aimed at a race that Stitt has wanted to win since taking up training.

It is the rich, time-honoured Ramornie Handicap at the Grafton Cup Carnival in July.
