KEMPSEY will host its fist ever major martial arts tournament later this week.
Dojo Zen Chi Ryu will host a round of the Australian Martial Arts Championships (AMAC) at Melville High School this Sunday, August 16.
Open to competitors of all ages, the event will feature disciplines including tae-kwondo and various forms of karate and is expected to attract at least 50 athletes.
AMAC competitions are rarely held outside the major urban centres and securing the event is a major coup for the local dojo.
“It’s the first ever event in Kempsey,” a spokesperson for the dojo said.
“The main reason we asked to have it here was for students who find it difficult to travel to compete.
“This way they have a local tournament but can still qualify for the Australian championships.”
Locally, martial arts have seen a significant growth in popularity in recent years.
There are currently around 50 students representing two dojos practising the sport in Kempsey.
