BROTHERS David and Michael Spokes may work together at the family owned Bridgestone Tyre Centre but this weekend they will be squaring off against each other in the Wittitrin 200 Off Road Race.
Both have competed in every Wittitrin event since its inception in 2005 but it’s the older brother David who has enjoyed the most success with first outright in 2006, and second placing’s in 2005 and 2007.
Michael has been a contender in each event, however, bad luck and mechanical problems have combined to stop him achieving the desired results.
Both were casualties in last year’s race with mechanical dramas although they performed well in the Prologue and set the pace early in the event.
Although they travel around the State to compete David and Michael always look forward to their ‘home’ race at Wittitrin.
“To win a local race is always something special and with the Wittitrin 200 growing in status the past few years it means a lot to finish on top of the podium,” David Spokes said.
“We spend a lot of time in the workshop to ensure that we are fully prepared for this weekend so it was disappointing last year when neither of us was in a position to challenge for victory.
“Hopefully we can make amends this year. It would be fantastic to come away on Sunday afternoon with another win”.
Michael is also confident of a good showing.
“We’ve been pretty unlucky the past 12 months, so we must be due for a good result. Last year we ran strong early, and I was pushing pretty hard, but with the quality field’s these days you really have to be on your game and consistently fast. Sure, you make the odd error sometimes, but that goes hand in hand with Motor Racing,” he said.
“The Kempsey Macleay Off Road Club always do a great job running the Wittitrin 200 so David and I will be pushing our friendly rivalry to the limit in an effort to see a local take victory.”
Spectators should keep an eye out for the yellow Spokes Racing 46 and 216 machines as they blast around the Wittitrin course this weekend.
