Off road battle begins in town

19 Mar, 2010 07:27 AM
THE State’s best Off Road racers will be in action at Dondingalong Saturday and Sunday as the battle gets underway for the NSW Off Road Championship.

Every competitor will be keen to kick their season off in the best possible manner by turning in a strong performance on the challenging, but fast, Dondingalong track.

Although entries do not close until today nominations have already been received from members of the Kempsey Macleay Off Road Club, Hunter Valley Off Road Racing Association, Crookwell Off Road Club, Warialda Motor Sports Club, and Central North Coast Sporting Car Club.

A strong contingent of locals is set to take on the visitors.

Tim and Andy Baker will be in the familiar Baker family VW Pro Buggy however, 2010 signals a change of colours, with the buggy now orange rather than its familiar green.

The all female team of Katherine Wellings and Elizabeth Lee will once again be in the thick of the action in the popular Sportsman Class.

Other Kempsey club members to nominate early include the father and son team of Murray Bignall and Conrad Bignall in their Pro and Prolite Buggies.

After a season away from the sport the Port Macquarie father and son team of Chris and Len Levi, representing the Kempsey Club, will once again compete in the Super 1650 Class.

Another team to keep an eye on is the Phil Page - Dustin Barque combination in their Prolite machine.

Members of the Kempsey Club, the pair have always been spectacular at Dondingalong.

Kempsey Macleay Off Road Club members will be doubly keen to do well as the event is also round one of the East Coast Tri Challenge series.

The 2009 Series saw the Kempsey club go down narrowly to the Hunter Valley Off Road Racing Association.

The Dondingalong Off Road Circuit is located 13km from town on Gowings Hill Rd and provides a natural amphitheatre setting for race fans.

Admission is free both days with full catering available on the grounds.

The Prologue will be run Saturday morning with the first round of racing getting underway at midday. Racing resumes at 9.30am on Sunday.
