THE recent NSW Junior Long Track Championships held at Kurri Kurri’s Loxford Raceway was well attended by junior members of the Macleay District Motorcycle Club.
The two-day event showcased quality, first class racing and Macleay District Motor Cyle Club (MDMCC) junior members performed at an extremely high level, and made their presence felt.
The most successful was Kane Burns who raced his favoured KTM 85SX. He achieved a third place podium finish in the final of the 11 to under 13 years, 85cc 2stroke/150cc 4 stroke standard wheel class.
The finals line up included no less than nine past and present Australian title holders and podium finishers and the racing was always going to be fast and competitive.
Qualifying in ninth position for the finals and with the best race gates already taken by the higher qualifiers, Kane had to settle for the less competitive gate four to launch his assault on the title.
This proved to be no handicap with the start gate dropped Kane managed to get a blistering start and hit the entry to the first left hand corner in second position behind Kurri Kurri’s Josh Pickering.
Despite an onslaught from riders on the faster outside race line Kane held his second place position and began his pursuit of Pickering.
Three laps of the five done and the current Australian Title holder Joshua ‘Chunky’ McDonald was in third place and made his move through the corner one and passed Burns, only to have Burns immediately adjust his race line to place himself bar to bar with McDonald.
Another lap down and still bar to bar with the Aussie champ, McDonalds race skill and experience prevailed to take second place. Pickering came first.
In addition Kane also contested and managed to obtain a third place podium finish in the 80 to 160cc Standard 4 stroke Class aboard the Mark and Heather Jordan supplied YamahaTTR 125.
The Yamaha performed superbly against the larger capacity 150cc contenders. Kane is grateful to the Jordan’s for the loan of the bike.
Another starring local included Daniel Oram, who proved once again that he is one of the best starters in the State qualifying comfortably for the finals of the very competitive premier 150cc and 250 cc classes.
Despite missing out on a podium finish he continues to improve every time he lines up on the starters grid.
Equally impressive was the performances of club members and finalists, Joe Barsby, Frank Ryan, Pat Lahey, Trent Maybury, Sam Davies and Hayden ‘Spud’ Stewart.
These young fellas are certainly keeping the other riders honest, ensuring they have to work hard for good results.
Young Ryan ‘Blocka’ Brady displayed great ride skills showing why he is one of the favorites in his hotly contested 65cc class. Misfortune came his way through no fault of his own affecting his finals position.
Unfortunately, both Chris Jordan and Nick Lahey both sustained injuries that bought to an end their campaigns, despite achieving great results during the qualifying heats.
The Australian Dirt Track Titles will be hosted in Canberra later this year and it will be interesting to see how everyone goes.
MDMCC will host the second leg of the tri-challenge series between Macleay, Gunnedah and Taree clubs this Sunday at the Greenhill Speedway.
The Akubra Classic will be staged on October 11.
