 Farley leads the Aussie charge

Farley leads the Aussie charge

29 May, 2009 10:18 AM
KEMPSEY’S bullriding sensation Pete Farley was in action at the 2009 Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Troy Dunn International at the Townsville Entertainment Centre last Friday night.

More than 4000 Queenslanders cheered on excitedly as Team Australia trounced the international all-star Team Rest Of The World in 20-man Australia v the Rest of the World competition.

The young Aussie contingent stepped up and blitzed the opposition with a consummate display on some of the rankest bulls this nation has to offer.

Pete was watched from the stands in Townsville by his mother, Rosalee, but his father stayed behind in Kempsey to save the family herd from rising floodwaters.

Pete will lead the Australian charge this weekend at the 2009 PBR Brendon Clark Invitational in Newcastle.

Led superbly by their captain, 2008 PBR Australia Champion Farley, the young Aussies scored a massive combined total of 1104.5 points to the internationals’ 675.

Farley, who has been riding on the elite PBR Built Ford Tough Series in the US for most of this year, was ecstatic with the efforts of his countrymen.

“I’ve really been looking forward to riding here in Townsville and all the boys went pretty good,” Farley said.

“Our boys know what they are doing so I really left it up to them as individuals to get it done for the team.”

Mexican Rocky McDonald rode two of Australia’s rankest bulls on his way to claiming victory in last Saturday night’s 2009 PBR Troy Dunn International at the Townsville Entertainment Centre.

With Farley leading the competition in the championship round, McDonald exploded into the arena on Western Star to snatch victory with a commanding 90-point ride.

Farley led the local charge with Saturday night’s incredibly close second place. His two rides left him just half a point shy of McDonald and his exhilarating trip on Lionel Simpson’s brutal bull Down Under earned the event high score of 91.5 points.

Another New South Welshman, David Kennedy picked up third place, only one point behind Farley. Kennedy was a last minute replacement for injured American Harve Stewart and only learned of his inclusion late that afternoon.

PBR Australia president Troy Dunn told the crowd that he was amazed at the skill levels displayed in tonight’s event.

“I take my hat off to these three guys on the podium tonight,” Dunn said.

“It was an unbelievable event and I was jumping out of my skin watching these guys in the championship round.”

The bone-crunching action of the Professional Bull Riders excitement machine now rolls south to Newcastle for the 2009 PBR Brendon Clark Invitational.

After one weekend off these tough-as-teak cowboys regroup in North Queensland for the Bundaberg Rum PBR Touring Pro Ingham, before wrapping up the PBR Mega Month on the Gold Coast with the 2009 PBR World Challenge.
