Kempsey boxer Alistair Lardner will be hoping its third time lucky when he contests the 2008 Australian Amateur Boxing titles next month.
The talented flyweight will contest his third consecutive Aussie titles in Townsville from November 27 to 29.
Already he has won silver and bronze at the titles and 2008 could be the year he takes home the gold.
Lardner currently trains at George’s Gym, a local, independently owned and financed gym, which has been operating for 20 years training young Macleay boxers.
During this time, the gym has produced several Australian title holders in Conrad Lardner, Daniel Hoskins (two titles), Mark Roberts (two titles), Alwyn Duke (two titles), Gabby Duke, Reynold Quinlan, Cecil Lardner and Don Kershaw (two titles).
Another gym graduate Paul Duke defeated former Australian champion and Olympic representative Gary Large to claim the Oceanic title.
At last year’s Aussie titles in Parkes, Lardner fought Queensland’s Kye Wehrman in the final of the junior flyweight, going down in a close point’s decision. The gym is currently seeking sponsorship from Macleay businesses to assist with Lardner’s expenses including travel, accommodation, equipment and shirts.
