MORE than 25 teams are gearing up for the seventh annual Crescent Head Rugby Sevens this weekend.
On Saturday rugby enthusiasts will converge on Ian Walton Fields at Crescent Head to witness the fast paced rugby sevens.
Twenty men’s teams have nominated, while six women’s teams will compete for a share of the $8000 prize money.
The Macleay Argus talked to event organiser James Lancaster about one of the most prestigious Rugby Sevens tournaments in country NSW.
Mr Lancaster said Hamilton, which has won the event twice in the past three years, will be back, as will fellow Newcastle club Merewether.
“They will have some pretty stiff competition from Drummoyne in Sydney and Tuggeranong from the ACT,” he said.
“The Lloyd McDermott selected Aboriginal side will also be competing. Lloyd was the first Aborigine to play for the Wallabies, and he has funding to field sides in tournaments like this. The team is selected from rugby clubs across Australia.”
Hosts Kempsey Rugby Union Club, and clubs from South West Rocks, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie will be competing.
The Crescent Sevens is a popular event on the sporting calendar.
“There are a couple of things that make the tournament so popular,” Mr Lancaster said.
“Crescent Head draws people, it is a well-known surfing area, and a popular destination.
“The carnival is well run by the Kempsey Cannonballs.
“The ground is immaculate, the dressing sheds are clean, and great food is offered.
“Their attention to detail is great.”
The first game will kick off at 8am, with the semi-finals to start about 6pm.
Entry is $5 and there will be full canteen and bar facilities.
