KEMPSEY swimmer Waylan Murray became the club’s first National Age Championships qualifier in over 10 years following an outstanding meet at the NSW Country Championships at Sydney’s Olympic Park last week.
The 14-year-old set the standard with the fastest ever time by a Kempsey swimmer when he stopped the clock at 17 minutes 17 seconds to claim fifth place in the Men’s Open 1500m freestyle in only his fourth attempt at the distance.
He rounded out the meet with three top 10 finishes.
This caps a stellar year for the year nine Kempsey Adventist School student following.
- Twelve age and three open medals at the Mid North Coast Championships.
- Seven gold and four silver medals at the NSW Country Regional Championships.
- At his first attempt at Open Water Swimming taking the Open title at the Glenbawn Classic 3km swim at Scone.
The Kempsey Club has gone from strength to strength this year with a team of eight travelling to the Country Championships.
Club records were broken by Waylan Murray, Grace Ryan and Ashleigh Thurgood.
Personal best times fell including first timer Mark Thurgood in the 12 years 100m breaststroke, and a number of top ten finishes to Waylan, Grace and Jayden Arnott.
Coach Tony Hudson credits the result to the dedication shown to training with some members in the water up to 11 sessions a week.
