It was no walk in the park for the home side, despite Tigers sitting neat the bottom of the table.
Rangers played a catch-up game on Wednesday night (August 7) against last year’s premiers, the Taree Wildcats, at Taree. They scored an impressive 7-4 win to take top spot on the ladder.
Coach Dean Riordan made two changes from Wednesday’s winning team. Chad Applegate and Chris Walker returned to the starting line up with Danny Debono and Josh Wilson dropping back to reserve grade.
Going into Saturday’s game the club was looking to score a big win and put a bit of space between them and Wallis Lakes and Port United, who share second place, in the race to the minor premiership.
The big win looked like it was going to happen after only 30 seconds. The Tigers kicked off and Sam Potter won the ball. He ran down the left hand side and smashed a left footed shot past the helpless Tigers keeper.
With 12 minutes on the clock, big brother Andrew tapped in Rangers second.
It was a fine team effort after great lead up work from John Henry and Jack Shaw, who placed the ball on a platter for Potter.
This was as good as it got for Rangers as they started to struggle against a packed Tigers defence.
With so many defenders behind the ball, Rangers passing and movement started to waver. To the Tigers credit they scored just before the half-time break to cause a few headaches for coach Dean Riordan.
Leading 2-1, the second half never reached any great heights for Rangers as they couldn’t break down the numbers the Tigers had in defence.
The Great Northern players’ player went to young Jack Shaw who played his first three first grade games in one week.
Two points went to Brendan Pearson and one point to Paul Thurlow.
Darren Morn’s reserve grade side scored seven goals to get back in the winner’s circle and hold down second spot on the ladder behind the Taree Wildcats
They lost 2-1 on Wednesday night to the Wildcats but done a job on the Tigers.
This Saturday Rangers take on Old Bar at Danger St in the Coastline Credit Union Cup. Both clubs are lucky enough to have such a great sponsor with the Rangers currently leading with a 4-2 win in the first round down at Old Bar.
The Cup winner is decided over the two rounds. Old Bar currently sit just outside the top 5 so are looking for a win this weekend
Kick off is 1.15pm for reserve grade with a 3pm start in first grade.
Rangers ladies continued to dominate with an impressive 17-0 win against the Yowies and claimed the minor premiership for the third year in a row.
The ladies now face Wauchope to progress to the grand final. This game is to be played on Kemp St this weekend
The action on Dangar St begins this Friday night kicking off at 6pm with Col Willis’ 17-18s taking on Kempsey Saints for the minor premiership.
The team are three points behind the Saints and on the same goal average so a win for the boys will give them the title for the year and a great start to the weekend.
Darren Morn’s boys will kick off at 7.20pm against Port Saints to better their position for the semis. While Dean Riordans 15’s travel to Camden Haven at 8.40pm to play for the minor premiers they currently sit on the top of the 15s ladder with Lake Cathie.
