In the second round of the Macleay Valley Cricket Association, Kempsey Heights cemented their dominance early in the competition with a 123-run victory over South West Rocks.
Blake Giddy was in the headlines last week after scoring a half century on debut for Kempsey Heights.
This time older brother Todd claimed the bragging rights, top scoring with 85 runs.
Blake contributed to the score with a handy 56, his third half century in as many matches.
“There is a bit of a competition happening with the Giddy brothers,” Kempsey Heights captain Scott Witchard said.
“Todd won this round.”
Witchard said a wash-out for second grade was a blessing for the first grade team.
“We were going to be a bit short, but we picked up a few players from second grade,” he said.
“Tom Butler, who is only 17, was one of the players we picked up and he batted pretty well after scoring 50 odd in C-grade last week.
“He didn’t look out of place in the top grade.”
Witchard won the toss and elected to bat first at Athletics. The runs flowed early on for the Heights.
“Gids got his runs pretty quick,” Witchard said.
“We were 140 or something ridiculous at the first drinks break. He must have been seeing them pretty good.”
Kempsey Heights batted out their 35 overs to score a total of 226.
The best of the bowlers for South West Rocks was Michael Deal who took 4-30 off six overs. Captain Mark Smee also took two wickets and Brayden Peel took one.
Smee featured again, this time with the bat, top scoring for the Rocks with 51. Unfortunately only one other batsmen made it to double figures with Paul Owens scoring 13.
South West Rocks were bowled, well short of their target, for 103 in the 29th over.
Nearly all the bowlers snared a wicket for the Heights with Ben Paix the best finishing with figures of 3-23 off seven.
This week Kempsey Heights will face Nulla for the first time this season.
“They have a good couple of young fellas in the team,” Witchard said.
“Brody Clarke and Ben Taylor are also good players so it should be a pretty close match.”
