Warm and dry weather over the weekend has prompted Kempsey Shire Council to implement Level 3 restrictions on the outdoor use of potable water from the reticulated supply.
As of today, sprinklers and fixed hoses are banned.
Residents may use one hand-held hose for a maximum of one hour daily, in two 30-minute sessions every second day, during set times of the day.
An ‘odds and evens’ system applies, corresponding to one’s house number.
Residents of even-numbered addresses will be allowed to use a hose on even days of the month (e.g. February 12, 14, 16, etc.), with odd-number addresses operating on odd days.
Watering cans and buckets may be used at any time from a fixed tap.
Further restrictions apply to watering lawns and gardens; washing vehicles, boats and driveways; and the cleaning of windows, walls and roofs.
Water-saving measures within the home are encouraged, as are those at commercial, construction and landscaping businesses, which do not face formal restrictions.
For full details on restrictions, visit the council website: kempsey.nsw.gov.au
Penalties for breaches of restrictions can include $220 spot-fines or court action for more serious offences, with a fine of up to $2200.
It is the first time the Macleay Valley has had water restrictions in place since 2004.
