A large crowd watched a ruthless Marlins outfit witness one of the most dominating displays of football seen in years on the Macleay, as the hosts won with a scoreline of 102-4.
Coach Craig Smith’s forward pack was relentless in defence and attack and paved the way for the comprehensive victory.
From the kick-off, centre Alex Rouse set the scene for the game with a robust tackle that took the wind straight out of the Hurricanes.
The Harrington players knew the hosts meant business and many in the crowd sensed they would be witnessing an historic scoreline.
Forward Tony Duncan was awarded ‘man of the match’ by the referee, putting in an unstoppable tradesman-like performance.
Captain Grant Schubert and Mick Judd took the ball straight up the middle throughout the game to give the Marlins backline plenty of room to show their flair.
Tries came at will, with the visitors constantly on the back foot from the onslaught of the Marlins pack.
Grant Coleman and Paul Owens revelled around the ruck with the extra.
Smith was ecstatic with his team’s performance, happy with how the players stuck to the game plan and how the bench players took it to the Hurricanes.
Interchange Jason Langham debuted for the Marlins and marked a stellar game with the players’ player award.
Newcomer Ray Wright was first to hit the scoreboard, with the centre scoring in the second minute of play.
Two minutes later Glen Cook was in with a nice backline movement down the sideline to give the hosts a 10-0 lead.
The Hurricanes were left shell-shocked when Judd scored a 70-metre try, and the flood gates opened.
Fullback Mick McPhillips had a great game with the fleet-footed back scoring three tries in an impressive game.
Crowd favourite Matt Knox also had a immediate impact on the game. The burly forward scored a try from his first touch.
Kurt Sheldrick also had a splendid game from the bench, and kept the crowd on its feet throughout.
Tries went to McPhillips (3) Judd (2), Cook (2), Rouse (2), Aiden Davey (2), Duncan (1), Wright (1), Knox (1), Sheldrick (1), Lyle Quinlan (1), Langham (1).
Goals - Judd (3), Owens (9), Coleman (1).
Hastings League’s best-and-fairest went to Duncan, while the Marlins’ three points went to Schubert, two points to Langham, and one to Rouse.
Smith has his chargers primed for the derby match with Lower Macleay Magpies.
A large Marlins contingent is expected to turn up to Smithtown oval, on April 26, to spur on their team.
