At Tuesday’s monthly council meeting, there was a unanimous vote to approve a recommendation for the bus stop – situated on the western side of Smith St – to remain where it is after the revitalisation of the thoroughfare.

However, its long-term location could change, with the design plan for CBD beautification work to include provision for the bus stop to be moved to Forth St.

Councillors voted to amend the wording of the adopted recommendation to:

“that designs allow for the possible future relocation of the bus stop to Forth St.”

It had originally added the provison that this was dependent on “sufficient demand for increased pedestrian area in the CBD to warrant its movement in the future”.

Councillors agreed such a decision should be based on the views of the wider community, rather than any vocal minority of bus users, pedestrians or any group of stakeholders.
