The 18-year-old high school student earned a one-two-three for his light Sussex bantam pullets in the poultry section.
Pullets are fowl less than 12 months old.
It was the first time one of Beau’s birds had won a category, and the achievement was crowned further by the judges’ decision to award second and third places in the category for two more of his pullets.
The young competitor also earned a third place for one of the light Sussex bantam cockerels he entered at the show.
“I took six chooks down to Sydney - two cockerels and four pullets,” Beau said.
“It’s the fourth time I’ve been down there, and I’ve had a few second places and thirds, but actually winning was a good feeling.”
The Kempsey High School student went to Homebush with his dad Greg, who had entered large white leghorns.
“Beau’s a member of the Kempsey Poultry Club and took an interest in them a few years ago,” Greg said.
“We watched the chooks get judged on Thursday morning and the results were in that afternoon.
“I’ve had chooks for about six or seven years and we also enter them in the Kempsey Show.”
The Powicks will compete again at this year’s local show, which runs at Kempsey Showground next Tuesday and Wednesday.
“It’s just a hobby and fun,” Beau said.
“I’ll have different birds for the Kempsey Show.”
Kempsey Poultry Club secretary Terry Burley was another successful Macleay breeder at Homebush last week.
One of his white leghorn bantam cockerels won no fewer than four categories.
“It’s always good to win at a big show,” he said.
“That’s what you breed them for.
“The winning fowl I took down has been auctioned off.
“I’m pleased for Beau, for a young fella he’s done a good job and he beat some top breeders.
“It was the biggest Show for a long time, with more than 4000 entries (in the poultry section).”
