The drama began just before 5am when the driver of the south bound car carrier pulled his truck to the side of the road with what is believed to have been a mechanical fault.
A fire quickly took hold of the truck and its load of eight cars and they were destroyed by the blaze.
The heat from the fire caused the cabin of the truck to collapse under the weight of the car being carried over the cab.
One of the cars incinerated was a classic mid-1960’s Ford Mustang.
Fire and rescue NSW units from Kempsey and local Rural Fire Service units responded to the emergency and extinguished the fire.
A nearby resident said he heard the truck pull up just before 5am.
“I went outside to investigate why my dogs were barking and I heard a load whining noise, like maybe the truck had damaged a wheel bearing or something,” he said.
“Before long you could see the flames over the top of the trees.”
Traffic was reduced to alternating flow north and south for much of the day while the recovery of the truck and its cargo could be arranged.
