Meanwhile, further north, emergency services are yet to find any trace of an Irish surfer who went missing off Byron Bay on Saturday. The tourist was one of three friends caught in a rip at Tallow Beach.
Wednesday 8.15am: Water Police and Roads and Maritime Services were working with South West Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club off-shore on Wednesday morning.
All three groups were busily searching in water to the north and south of Smokey Cape.
Police have established a command post near the lighthouse at Arakoon.
The State Emergency Service was combing the land nearby, and were expected to be helped by police trail bikes.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was due to arrive in the area at 9am.
Earlier: Police and emergency services personnel have resumed a search for a missing 25-year-old man at South West Rocks.
Police said the man went missing in water off Smoky Cape Camping Reserve. He was believed to be camping with a friend when he went into the water to have a swim around 5pm.
Police believe the man then got into difficulty after about 15 minutes. His friend contacted police when he lost sight of him.
Police arrived a short time later and startd a search that was assisted by a number of other agencies; including local Surf Rescue, local Maritime Rescue Service, NSW Ambulance Paramedics, and the Westpac helicopter.
About 8.30pm, the search was suspended due to poor visibility and surf conditions.
The search resumed at 7am Wednesday.
A number of emergency services are involved in the search process including, local police, officers from the Marine Area Command, the State Emergency Service (SES), Maritime Rescue and local Surf Rescue crews, including the Mid North Coast SLSC branch jetski.
