The 64-year-old man and his 63-year-old wife were in their home at the Macleay River end of Kemps Street early on Friday evening when the man noticed some items out of place in the bedroom.
The man was allegedly confronted by two men wearing balaclavas who assaulted him and then forced him to lie on the ground.
When the man’s wife came to his aid she was also forced to the ground, before the two robbers threatened the couple and demanded cash.
The men allegedly fled the home a short time later with a small amount of money and personal items including sporting medals with little but sentimental value.
Police and emergency services attended the scene and established a crime scene at the home.
The man sustained head and facial injuries and the woman sustained a cut to her wrist; both were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics.
Police said that the robbers tried to break into two other units in the complex without success before entering the couples unit.
The Police Dog Unit assisted other officers in a thorough search of the surrounding area, however the men were not found.
The police are seeking two men in connection with the robbery.
They are described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, aged in their late teens to early 20s, about 160cm tall and of a slim build.
One of the men was last seen wearing dark clothing, a hooded jumper, dark-coloured balaclava and gloves. The second man was seen wearing an orange-coloured balaclava and gloves.
Anyone who knows the identity of either man, or has any information that could assist detectives, is urged to come forward and contact the Kempsey police on 6561 6199 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
Information can be given anonymously and is treated with the strictest confidence.
