Stalls outside the CBD outlets of Big W, Woolworths, McDonald’s and Coles will offer merchandise – including the familiar Legacy badges – that will help the widows, widowers and young families of Australian Defence Force personnel that have given their lives in service.
Proceeds collected within the Macleay will be re-distributed within the area to provide practical and financial support for households that have lost a family member who might have assisted otherwise with the routine and responsibilities faced.
Mid North Coast Legacy office manager and community service worker Gwen Norris said the support available had been extended this year to help personnel affected by trauma during their service.
“They might need counselling in the short or long term, so we assist with that,” she said.
“Legacy helps widows, children and dependents in many ways.
“For example, we arrange holidays at the Legacy house at Moss Vale.
“We assist with needs for education and self-development, from preschool age through to university, and provide mentoring.
“Legacy also advocates with government departments on issues like housing and pensions, etc.”
There are more than 20 Legatees in the Macleay, whose voluntary roles involve visiting the 250 or so individuals in the area that benefit from the not-for-profit organisation.
These visits can be as straightforward as dropping by to say hello and have a chat, to helping carry out minor domestic repairs, or completing paperwork.
Ms Norris said Legacy welcomed any help in collecting during next week’s fundraising.
“It’s the only time of year we ask people for money,” she said.
“A lot of people don’t realise Legacy doesn’t receive any government money.”
Mid North Coast Legacy has arranged a family golf day at the Macksville Country Club, on Sunday, September 14.
The registration deadline for the four-person Ambrose event is 9am on the day, and costs $10 per player, or $30 for a family team. Call the club on 6568 1400 to register.
