THE arrivals of spring and last week’s long-overdue rainfall are perfectly timed for Macleay Landcare Network’s (MLN) Tree and Produce Fair, to be held in Kempsey on Saturday.

It will be the natural resource management and biofarming advocacy organisation’s second such event of the year.
And, like the Autumn Tree and Produce Fair – which was held in March – it will run in conjunction with the monthly Riverside Market.
Organised by MLN committee members, Saturday’s event will feature an information stand and upwards of 15 stalls.
Landcare officers Natasha English and Sharon Cunial are confident there will be a good turnout at Riverside Park.
“It’s a good opportunity for people to buy native seedlings,” Ms English said.
“There’ll be items of local provenance, for those that are keen to source native endemic plants that are locally grown for their gardens.
“You don’t always know where items are grown if you get them from major retailers.
“Visitors to the Tree Fair will also be able to get bulk seedlings for their properties, it’s not just for gardens.”
Among the other stalls signed up so far will be ones selling worm farms, bush foods, bromeliads, fruit and locally made mueslis and cordials.
And MLN’s own information stand will sell books on various topics relating to natural resources management – including pest control and weed identification.
There will be details available of various grant schemes open to property owners within the Kempsey shire.
These include a bio-farming grant being administered by Ms Cunial; and a Kempsey Koala Project grant to help protect habitat for the marsupials, which Ms English has coordinated.
There will be information also on a new national Landcare project.
The Australia-wide movement will celebrate its 25th anniversary later this year.
“The Tree and Produce Fair will be set up between the barbecue area and the boat ramp,” Ms Cunial said.
“But if it’s wet, it’ll relocate to the car park area.
“We hope plenty of people will come along and meet the committee members manning the Landcare stand.”
A limited number of stall spaces are available.
