The driver reported hearing the sound of a tyre blow-out followed a few moments later by flames coming out of the centre axle of the A-trailer.
The driver stopped and attempted to extinguish the fire however he soon emptied the extinguisher and the fire continued to burn.
He unhooked the prime mover and drove it off safely a short distance away.
The local Clybucca Fire Brigade arrived on the scene and began to suppress the fire and was soon joined by Fire and Rescue NSW units from Kempsey.
The northbound and southbound lanes of the highway were closed to all traffic for several hours before alternating stop-go traffic control was put in place.
The trailer's load of proved difficult to fully extinguish and continued to smoulder.
A front end loader was brought in to clear them from the trailers so recovery operations could begin.
The damage bill for the trailers is estimated to be about $200,000.
One lane of the Pacific Highway is now open two kilometres north of Plummers Lane at Clybucca following an earlier truck fire that closed the highway.
This means with one lane open alternating traffic (stop/slow) conditions are in place on the Pacific Highway.
