Work began again this week on the Kempsey railway footbridge upgrade, with barges being used to access the deck from the Macleay River below.
The pedestrian footbridge will be closed from 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday for the next five weeks.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the next stage of a $1.2 million project to replace the deck and rail of the timber footbridge to increase safety for local users has resumed.
“The Kempsey rail footbridge provides an important link between West and South Kempsey,” the spokesperson said.
“For the safety of workers and pedestrians, during work hours pedestrian access across the bridge will be temporarily suspended for the next five weeks, weather permitting.
“Barges will be used below the bridge to allow maintenance to be carried out in hard -to-reach places of the bridge.”
The bridge is expected to reopen to pedestrians in December, weather permitting.
The RRMS thanks the community for their patience during the footbridge upgrade.
