Experienced racer Jamie Oram rode his KTM 990 Adventure to a new elapsed time record mark of 8.00 seconds over the 200m course, eclipsing the old mark of 8.01 seconds which was held jointly by two other Kempsey rider in Derek Seam (2012, Yamaha YZ450F) and Josh Rowe (2002, Honda CR500).
Oram wasn’t the only Kempsey record breaker, Andrew Jordan set a new mark in the 65cc 7-10 Years of 10.37s, smashing the previous record of 10.53 seconds which had stood since 2008.
Oram said it was a popular, fun event which attracted a lot of Kempsey riders.
“There was a big crew from Kempsey up there that’s for sure and they did really well, setting new records and winning multiple classes,” he said.
“The KTM 990 is just like a big dirt bike and I just put some knobby tires on and I was ready to go.
Reaction times and getting the power to the ground is the key to success in drag racing and I was riding multiple bikes in different classes so I was jumping off one onto another all the time.”
Apart from record breakers Oram and Jordan, other standout performances from Kempsey based riders were put in by Ethan Borthwick (under 9 years-of age 50cc demo), Sammy Davies (1st junior 250cc and fastest junior rider), Dylan Holder (1st senior 250cc), Derek Seam (1st up to 500cc and four stroke open) and unlimited winner Brian Hudson who downed Oram in the big bike final.
Other Macleay riders to come home with some silverware were Dylan Smith form Yarravel (2nd 7-9 years 50cc division 2), Jake Davison (2nd junior 150cc), Ahron Francis (2nd senior 250cc) and Ryan Francis from Frederickton who finished runner-up to Seam in the four-stroke open class.
Jake crisp might have missed out on the final but he set the fastest time of the day in the senior 250cc two-stroke category.
