The exchange will involve the RSL buying land near the river for $1.
The council will receive a nearby riverside block in exchange. It will be added to existing 'Community' land.
Tuesday’s council meeting was told the RSL is proposing to expand.
Part of the expansion improves constructing a walkway between Belgrave St and a new ground floor foyer entry.
“The RSL has proposed two scenarios," the council agenda notes said.
"Firstly, an outright acquisition (of the land) by the RSL and secondly, a proposal to enter into a land exchange involving a section of the RSL land that is not being used by the RSL.”
On Wednesday, RSL secretary-manager Daniel Abela told The Macleay Argus: “We are looking to have a walkway downstairs into the new entrance.
“We are trying to get some land because we would like to also put a deck across the front and out towards the river so people can dine outside and utilise the river a little bit more.”
The recommendation proposed by council was for the land to be exchanged and “the value of the exchange be set at $1,” the RSL “to ensure the ongoing integrity of the flood mitigation wall and flood monitoring infrastructure at no cost to council,” and “all costs incurred in the land exchange be met by the RSL”.
This is not the first time the council and the RSL have entered into a land exchange: the same piece of land was purchased by the council from the RSL in 1990 for $1.
All councillors voted in favour of the exchange.
