The school opened to teachers, students and parents for the celebration, which attracted a crowd of more than 200 people.
The school is to close at the end of this term, just shy of its 150th year.
Despite the imminent closure, current principal Paul Lynch said there was a positive atmosphere at the open day.
“We have had a lot of feedback so far from people who said they had a wonderful time,” he said. “For me, the best part was meeting the former principals and hearing their stories from when they were in charge.
“It was great to be able to share in some of the school’s history.”
Those in attendance were given the opportunity to browse through old visitor books as well as punishment records.
There was also a special moment as the school’s perpetual trophies were handed back to the people whose names they bear.
Mr Lynch said even former students who were unable to attend on the day were able to make a contribution to the celebration.
“Our oldest living former student, Dick Saul, is in Vincent Court,” he said.
“He couldn’t make the trip so I read out a message from him regarding his life and dealings with the school.
“I took some of the students with me to visit him on Tuesday so he didn’t miss out on the fun.”
