The $3.1M contract to complete the refurbishment of Smith Street between Belgrave and Forth Streets will see the replacement of the existing paving, underground utility services, stormwater drainage, landscaping, street furniture, covered central crossing and resurfacing of the road.
Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Robert Scott said the council is looking forward to working with O’Donnell & Hanlon and the businesses in the CBD to deliver a good outcome.
“The work will result in new kerb and gutter along both sides of the road to tie in with the new footpath levels” Mr Scott said.
“It will pretty much follow what is there now however there is local widening of the footpath at the central crossing and at the Forth Street intersection to help slow traffic down and reduce the width of the road for pedestrians to cross in these locations”
Mr Scott said the new work will replace the temporary arrangements, including linemarking, which have been in place for over twelve months.
“When the work is completed, we will actually gain another 3 parking spaces overall, when compared to the temporary arrangements that are now in place” Mr Scott said.
Reporting to council, O’Donnell & Hanlon will be responsible for all aspects of the upgrade works, including communication and liaison with retailers and the community.
A project shopfront staffed with a permanent O’Donnell & Hanlon Community Liaison Officer will be based at 36 Smith St for the project’s duration.
Work is expected to begin in March and be completed by October 2015.
