He operated a wine bar and billiards saloon in Smith St, Kempsey for about 30 years from 1920.
After service in the Boer War, he played rugby league with the breakaway Newcastle Rebels team in 1908 and 1909, representing Australia during the latter season.
He enlisted in the 2nd Battalion on 18 August 1914, and after a heroic rescue of wounded soldiers in an open ships boat, he was recommended for a Victoria Cross. This did not eventuate, however in 1917 Stan was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his bravery.
Returning to Australia, he married Olla Stokes and the couple moved to Kempsey in 1920 to begin their business.
They moved to Newcastle after their business premises, badly damaged by the floods, was closed by orders of the local council.
