INTEREST in tomorrow's local government elections appears to be keen, with more than 10 per cent of enrolled voters having already marked their ballot papers by Wednesday evening.

That was expected to increase significantly over the final two days of pre-poll voting, with postal votes continuing to stream into the Belgrave St election office and ballot papers being collected from aged care homes.
After 6pm on Wednesday, 1874 had voted by pre-poll, 672 postal votes had been received and 82 ballot papers had been collected from nursing homes. There are 19,969 voters enrolled in the shire.
Pre-poll voting will close at 6pm this evening ahead of the election tomorrow.
There will be 14 polling stations across the local government area, all open between 8am and 6pm.
They are: the public schools at Aldavilla, Bellbrook, Frederickton, Kempsey East and Willawarrin; the community halls at Crescent Head and Stuarts Point; Kempsey High School; Gladstone Hall; Hat Head Surf Club Hall; Kundabung Recreation and Public Hall; Melville Sport and Recreation Centre; and South West Rocks Anglican Hall.
Previous polling places at the Kempsey West and Smithtown public schools will not be open for this election.
There are also six declared institutions, at which votes from residents or patients unable to attend will be collected.
These are: Kempsey District Hospital; Cedar Place Aged Care Facility, Vincent Court Hostel, both at Kempsey; Booroongen Djugun Aged Care Facility, Greenhill; Macleay Valley House, Frederickton; and South West Rocks Nursing Centre.
Enrolled voters must vote in the mayoral and the councillor elections.
To register a formal vote, you must mark at least one preference for mayor and four preferences for councillor.
One group is standing and appears below the line on ballot papers. To vote for some or all of the group, you must mark individual preferences for each member.
Electoral officer Allan Wilcox said barring any significant hiccups, the first popularly elected mayor of Kempsey Shire would be declared no later than Tuesday.
He expects to announce the remaining eight members of the council no later than Friday.
