The home invasions in Middleton St, South Kempsey and Leith St in West Kempsey are not believed to be linked.
Police said a 64-year-old man was at home in Middleton St about 11.50pm on Friday, May 15, when he heard his dog barking and went to investigate.
When he got outside he was approached by two men armed with pieces of timber.
A fight broke out and the man was struck on the head by a piece of wood wielded by one of the intruders, who then ran off.
The man called police who responded with the dog unit and detectives who established a crime scene.
The man was taken to Kempsey District Hospital for treatment where he received four stitches to his head wound.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
Earlier that day in Leith St, thieves assaulted a man and stole his car after forcing their way into his house.
Police said a 24-year-old man was in his Leith St home about 7am when four men with their faces obscured with balaclavas and hooden jumpers knocked on the door, forcing their way into the house when the occupant opened the door.
They demanded money which was given to them before fleeing in the man’s 1997 Subaru WRX.
The man described some of his attackers as Caucasian and the others as of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance. All were about 190cm tall and of athletic build.
The car has since been recovered and investigations are continuing.
