Three months after Zac McKiernan celebrated reaching three figures, another member of the inaugural 2009 team will have the honour of getting to the mark with Saturday’s game against Beechwood set to feature a tribute to the former captain/coach.
Dufty said his team mate’s special day made him think about his own tally.
“I knew Zac was ahead of me because I have had a few injuries during my career at the Magpies but when he reached 100 games, I knew there was a slim chance that I could do it by the end of the season,” he said.
“We looked into it a bit and worked out exactly when it would be. It’s definitely something that I have wanted to achieve so I’m really looking forward to it.”
Since joining the team, Dufty has played an integral role in the club’s many successes including the 2010 premiership and multiple Bain Cup Titles.
He has also appeared in a host of finals series and continues to be a stand out in big games.
Dufty has had his share of setbacks along the way with a torn calf muscle and a fractured eye socket among the worst injuries he has suffered.
He said running out for a club like the Magpies means the good always outweighs the bad.
“What I like most about the Mapgies is the atmosphere every time you play a game,” he said.
“The team are always looking out for one and there is a really big social aspect away from the field as well. When new players come in, it always takes them a few matches to find there feet but they are always made to feel very welcome. We’ve picked up a few signings mid season which has definitely given us a boost so there is a really good feeling there at the moment.”
Dufty is just coming off a stint as caretaker coach where he filled in for Joel McCafferty.
It is not the first time he has held a leadership role at the club having been captain/coach for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
Club treasurer Sonya Murphy said Dufty has always managed to prove his worth no matter what responsibilities are involved.
“He has gained the respect of so many within the club as a player, a coach, a leader and a mate,” she said.
“Luke is always willing to help out in any way he can, be it on the field or off. The Magpies are like family and he is one of the driving forces behind it. He deserves all of the praise and congratulations that comes with this wonderful achievement.”
The Lower Macleay Magpies will play the Beechwood Shamrocks at Smithtown Oval this Saturday.
Kick of is at 2.30pm with full canteen, bbq and bar facilities available.
