KEMPSEY Police and Australia Post are currently investigating the theft of parcels which were for delivery by Australia Post to residents of Kempsey and the surrounding suburbs.
In a statement the NSW Police Mid North Coast Area Command have requested people to call them if they have had a parcel go missing in the post.
“Police are asking for any Kempsey resident who has not received a parcel that was due to be delivered by Australia Post between 23 September and 18 November 2015 to contact Kempsey Police on 02 65616199, regardless of whether they have already reported the loss to Australia Post,” the statement says.
“Callers will be asked to provide their contact details, consignment number and parcel contents.”
In early December, the Macleay Argus alerted Kempsey residents that a number of parcels reportedly failed to be delivered with Australia Post confirming that an investigation was taking place.
At the time, Kempsey’s Wendy Cooper said she had lost goods through the mail worth hundreds of dollars over the past few months.
“I ordered a phone from Coffs Harbour for $160 to be sent to me through Australia Post but it never arrived,” Ms Cooper said.
“I had a tracking number and I was home the day that it was to arrive. When it didn’t arrive I rang Australia Post who claimed the parcel had arrived.”
Ms Cooper said she had the same problem a few months ago.
“I was waiting for packages from Western Australia and again they were not delivered and I was left in the same position where I couldn’t do anything about it.
“I work hard for my money to support my family and the phone was for my daughter for Christmas and unfortunately I can’t afford to buy another because I just don’t have the money.”
Another Kempsey local, Betty Dufty, said she had ordered $700 worth of Lego for her children and like many others, the package failed to arrive.
“Australia Post told me that it had arrived and they brushed off my concerns,” Ms Dufty said.
“It happened again some time later and Australia Post claimed they investigated but again their conclusion was that the parcel arrived.
“They said that they took my claims seriously and my complaint is on record so if a trend of missing parcels is identified they can find where the problem is occurring.”
In a statement released in early December, an Australia Post spokesperson told the Macleay Argus the safe and secure delivery of mail is their highest priority.
“Theft of or tampering with mail is a federal offence, and Australia Post takes any incident very seriously,” the spokesperson said.
“As this matter is currently being investigated, we cannot comment further. Australia Post would like to reassure residents that the investigation will not impact our ability to deliver mail to the local region.”
