In what is turning into a yearly event, Mid North Coast AFL development coordinator Scott Dalton said the clinic is an initiative of the Sydney Swans.
“It’s an initiative by the Swans to give back to regional areas because many people who live on the Mid North Coast don’t get down to Sydney to see them and this is an opportunity for the kids to meet some of their favourite players,” Dalton said.
“They will be visiting a number of schools and taking a couple of classes out to do a clinic and kick around the footy and then there will be a super clinic for 5 to 16-year-olds later in the afternoon at the South Kempsey oval.
“The players are visiting St Josephs, Melville High Kempsey Adventist and Kempsey High and then they will be going to South Kempsey for the clinic were they’ll go through basic AFL skills with the kids ,” Dalton said.
Dalton said at this time he can’t name the players that will be attending the clinic and schools as names have changed over the past week.
“Over the last week names have changed so I won’t really find out what Sydney Swans players are here until I pick them up at the airport on Monday.”
Despite rugby league being the prominent sport on the Mid North Coast, Dalton said the sport is growing rapidly.
“AFL is going really well and at the moment and we currently have four teams in the junior competition based on the Mid North Coast which are Manning Valley, Camden Haven, Taree and last year’s premiers, the Macleay Valley Eagles,” he said.
The Macleay Valley Eagles will have AFL representatives at the clinic on Tuesday where they will be holding a registration and information day for kids interested in playing AFL in 2016. The Sydney Swans super clinic will be held from 3.30 to 4.15pm on Tuesday, February 9 at the South Kempsey oval.
