WHILE the nation pauses to remember the women, children and men who have lost their lives to domestic violence today, a local organisation says it is also a time to raise awareness of the local people who continue to suffer.

A remembrance day will be officially acknowledged at Parliament House today (Wednesday May 4) where red roses will be laid for women, white for children and yellow for men, in remembrance of their loss.
“Women are dying each week from domestic violence so we really need to raise awareness of that,” Shelley Baker, the chair of the Kempsey Domestic Violence Monitoring Committee (KDVMC), said.
“This is just one event being held at Parliament House but it’s something we can take back into our own community to let people know that it’s happening and that there is a lot of support out there for people experiencing domestic violence.”
KDVMC, which is made up of representatives from government and non-government organisations within the Kempsey LGA, is hoping to plan a Remembrance Day event to be held in Kempsey in 2017.
