Topical global affairs were debated and resolutions agreed for 34 mock scenarios at the weekend’s Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) event organised by the Rotary Clubs of Kempsey, Kempsey West and South West Rocks.

Kempsey High School was the venue that hosted 66 of New South Wales’ best and brightest students who arrived in the valley for three days of proceedings United Nations-style.
One of those who helped make the event possible was Rotary committee member Tania Powick who said the MUNA turnout was fantastic.
“18 schools were represented at the MUNA event, and all the students who took part wore a traditional costume indicative of the country they were representing,” Ms Powick said.
Basically, MUNA is an educational experience for the students akin to debating… it’s a lot of fun.

The aim of MUNA is to encourage young people to learn about other nations and world affairs. While providing them with an understanding of the function of the United Nations, students also develop debating skills and gain self confidence in public speaking.
Ms Powick said this year’s group were an amazing bunch of kids, and the feedback received from students and teachers alike was that it was the best MUNA yet.
“We had a great venue in Kempsey High School and the students enjoyed their stay with billets throughout the community. So I would like to say a big thank you to the families who hosted our visiting ‘dignitaries’.”
