Adam’s inspiration to do something to help others came out of a young leaders forum held in Sydney where he heard a speaker from the Credit Union Foundation Australia talk about the Village Entrepreneur Program.
“Through the program I discovered a Cambodian man who was my age, with the same number of kids I have. I immediately felt that I wanted to get behind him, after all he’s trying to support a family just the same as I am,” Adam said.
The program is designed to assist people from Cambodia and Timor-Leste living in poverty to become small business owners. It works by assigning an individual/family a ‘community investor’, who is an everyday Australian prepared to provide a monthly financial contribution to their village entrepreneur.
“It’s a lot like a sponsorship, where all the money you raise for the family enables them to start a small business. The money helps them buy what they need to start a business, like chickens or pigs, some of the funding also goes into local schools for educational purposes,” Adam said.
Another cause close to Adam’s heart is services for victims of domestic violence. Earlier this week Adam clocked-up 107 kilometres on an exercise bike, raising more than $500 for the proposed Kempsey Women and Children’s Shelter.
“I really wanted to do something locally having grown up in the area. After getting advice from an old friend, I decided that raising money for domestic violence victims was something I wanted to support,” Adam said.
The next step in Adam’s fundraising pipeline is the Coastline Charity Golf Day held on June 10. It costs $30 per player to enter which includes 18 holes of golf, a BBQ lunch and drink ticket. Format for the day will be a Four ball Ambrose.
There will also be sporting memorabilia auctions, raffles, competitions and lucky door prizes. Businesses that donate over $200 will receive signage at cycling and golf days, website promotion, in-branch recognition, social media coverage and discounted golf day packages.
