Once operational, the centre will teach students how to cook healthy meals for themselves, their families and friends, as well as provide them with registered qualifications in food preparation and service.
The grant was made possible by Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker and Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash who are both advocates for the college.
“This is not a traditional college; what it does is provide education and care to many disadvantaged students in the Macleay Valley who may not have had the chance otherwise to gain qualifications valued by potential employers,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“The hospitality learning centre will give students a chance to study, undertake practical activities and teach them life skills to ensure they can look after themselves outside the school environment,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
Minister for Regional Development Senator Fiona Nash said providing the best education was vital in driving jobs growth in regional areas.
“Facilities such as Macleay Vocational College mean more young people go into tertiary courses, which creates a more skilled local workforce,” Senator Nash said.
Kempsey Shire Council mayor Liz Campbell said the college was a breakthrough educational model providing life skills and practical support to our young people.
The college’s principal Mark Morrison believes the centre expansion would enhance the Mid North Coast region’s reputation as an educational hub.
“Our students will be able to train, cook and take home meals during the week, and eventually move into catering for local events.”
