The Macleay was well represented with siblings Mitchell and Jackson Korn, Brett and Katlyn Hutley, Jarrod Prosper, Brock Larance, Dan Pretty and Ben and Jai Pearce all competing.
The local boys aren’t strangers to Nationals, some having attended once or twice before while it was a first time appearance for the two girls.
Macleay Indoor Sports and Development Centre owner Troy McKiernan went to Dubbo with the group and also coached the girls under 17s side – he has done so at national level for the last four years.
He said he was extremely proud of the local boys and girls for their strong performances in Dubbo.
“The Cyclones were the only state to have representation in all five semi-finals and from that we ended up with two brothers, Mitchell and Jackson Korn making the 13s and 15s for the Australian All Stars side,” he said.
“Overall they did really well. We’ve had strong representation from our area over the years which is a great achievement for a small town like ours.”
Annika Learoyd from Coffs Harbour, who trained for three weeks at the South Kempsey indoor centre ahead of the championships, played for the NSW Cyclones and was named in the Australian All Stars.
Unfortunately though, this year is a non touring year, which means they won’t get a chance to represent Australia. The indoor cricket world cup is held every three years.
“It’s a non world cup year so its the recognition of being amongst the best players in Australia. The goal for them now is to work hard for the next two years and hopefully book themselves a spot in the world cup in Dubai,” McKiernan said.
“Over the last two to three years we’ve produced more than half a dozen players to Australian level so I think the opportunity is definitely there.”
