The Cannons’ travelled to Port for their Telstra UMNC rugby union fixture expecting a hard encounter and their two tries to three defeat of the Pirates in first grade showed the club has plenty of heart and a good chunk of talent.
The reserve grade Cannonballs were not so fortunate, losing 20-12. The under 16’s won their game 36-12 with a four try bonus point performance. The youngest Cannonballs in the under 14’s continued the win one, lose one theme going down 32-12 in an entertaining match.
Hastings League
In the Hastings League the Lower Macleay Magpies returned from their trip south to Harrington with a pretty convincing 90-10 victory in the kick.
An understrength SWR Marlins made the ‘toughest road trip of the year’ to Comboyne to take on the classy Tigers. The Marlins were at times down to 11 men on the field and the end result, a 40-16 loss, reflected that but the Marlins never gave up.
They were led from the front as always by captain Les Lockwood. Best for the Marlins were Lockwood, Reece Sines and Terry Tighe.
Group 3 Rugby League
The Macleay Valley Mustangs travelled to Taree to take on the Bulls in four grades on Sunday. The first grade endured a tough loss going down 40-14. The ladies league tag and previously undefeated under 18 ½ grade side also both lost. The shining light was the reserve grade squad who demolished the Bulls 64-12, keeping their finals hopes very much alive.
MNC Football
With Rangers having the bye the Kempsey Saints were the only local MNC team in action. The Saints knocked off the Camden Haven Redbacks 2-1 in first grade.
The Redbacks reversed the result in the ‘reggies’ downing the Saints by the same scoreline.
