Convener Dave Munday, principal at Aldavilla Primary, said 14 schools were in attendance, with competitors ranging in age from eight to 13.
“For the younger ones this can be their first time at a formal school competition,” Mr Munday told the Argus.
To qualify for the carnival, children had to star at their respective school athletic meet. The top four finishers at track, and top three from field and relay events at the Macleay carnival, will progress to the Lower North Coast event at Wauchope, where they will go up against youngsters from the Port Macquarie/Camden Haven catchment. The remaining two steps for the best of the best will be the North Coast and State competitions.
There is also a pathway for the small schools who compete against one another.
