Karen Hall from Schools as Community Centres and Sheri Foster from Kempsey Macleay Home Start work together to support Sow the Seed to Read, which is a project in the community that encourages parents to read to their children and promote the enjoyment of books.
The project has been supporting families in the Macleay for over 15 years and enjoys the assistance of Friends of the Library Kempsey, Kempsey Shire Library, teachers from Aldavilla School and the wonderful volunteer community readers from the SES.
Over the past 12 months, they have read to children from eight different schools and preschools, encouraging hundreds of children to have fun with reading. It’s believed that if parents read to their children each night from a young age it will help their learning and give them a great start to school.
The organisers continue to give parents Sow the Seed to Read bags at maternity at Kempsey Hospital and they have also established ‘Book Nooks’ at many local businesses, where children can sit and read while a parent is working.
If anyone has books that they have finished with and would like to donate for these ‘nooks’ this would be wlecomed. Contact Sheri at Homestart on 6562-8968 or Karen at Schools as Community Centres on 6562-1475.
